Facebreaker KO Party’s making its Wii debut on Friday in the UK. The cartoony boxer’s already seen release on Xbox 360 and PS3 and failed to make much of an impression, either critically or commercially. The graphics were solid, featuring nice bold colours and good production values, but the matches just seemed to devolve into hammering away at different punch buttons until you got lucky. Casual gameplay can be great, but you need a little depth to back it up.

Unusually for a Wii port, it should be reasonably faithful to its 360 and PS3 counterparts. The fighters weren’t that detailed, with the game instead relying on a cartoon art style. Hopefully, EA will have had time to take into account some of the feedback, and will have tuned this game a little more, because there’s potential in there for a fun party title. Embedded above is a video of an included mini-game. Because it wouldn’t be a Wii release without a minigame.

It’s a nice little idea. While we’ve seen online console gaming really take off this generation, we still haven’t seen a lot of big titles that really let you mix up local and online play. There’s definitely a lot of potential in the idea of having teams of people playing locally competing against other teams online, and it’ll be interesting to see how developers use the Wii Speak to do this. Having said that, its success as a peripheral probably hinges in no small part on the first Wii iteration of Animal Crossing. It’s due for release on the 5th of December.
