Iwata responds to Sony: Wii is out of the closet, in the center of the living room

Oh, but it’s so on now! After Sony threw a potshot at Nintendo with the statement that the Wii “owns the closet”, Ninty is finally coming out and stepping up – with claws drawn. Specifically, Satoru Iwata. With claws drawn.

On a Wii no ma (video service) info video, Iwata took the time to spell it out for Sony: we’re not in the closet, we’re in the center of the living room.

Nintendo: Excuse me, it’s not just ANY closet… it’s Obama’s.

Take it away, Iwata-san:

According to our internal research, 87 of Wii consoles are connected to the largest TV screen in the household, which is set in the center of the living room. Our consoles are not only out of the closet, they are also in the middle of the house. This shows what kind of our customers are playing Wii, as of January this year.

As you can see, Wii is played by people in a wide ranged of ages, and male-female ratio is nearly equal. As I have mentioned, Wii has spread with ages. Nearly 90 of the consoles are connected to the largest TV screen of the internet, video streaming or payment system has established through our videogame businesses.

Good on you for defending the Wii!

But really… it took you a week to come up with that comeback?

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years to have support for up to four players

After Years product info - Image 1The WiiWare direct sequel to Cecil and Rosa’s crystal-hunting adventure, Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, just updated its official site and we now have a better idea of what the game will look like. But the interesting part here is that the product information reveals that After Years is gonna have support for 1-4 players, which should add a great twist to the gameplay which we still know very little about right now.

Would be interesting how four players into an RPG would translate into, especially since the battle system is still pretty vague. According to the site, a new Band System will allow characters to perform a new attack at the cost of MP, which sounds a lot like the Dual and Triple Techs we’ve seen in Chrono Trigger, only there would be more people controlling the characters this time around. The Moon will also influence the new battle system, depending on its phase, may strengthen or weaken attacks and/or magic for you or for your foes.

Other cool info is that some of the characters from the original FFIV will be returning, like the martial arts expert, Yang; the summoner Rydia; the two-sword ninja, Edge; the slapstick twins Palom and Porom; and even Edward, the bard. There are a lot more characters coming to join the party, but Square Enix hasn’t revealed them just yet.

Still no word on a release estimate, but you guys know we’ll let you know once we get word, right? Until then, keep checking back with us here on QJ.

No details whatsoever yet, but E3’s just a bit over a month away. What do you guys think it will be? Lost Planet 2 for PS3? Another remake of a Resident Evil remake? Heroin Hero?

New Ghost Recon coming, Red Steel 2 and Splinter Cell: Conviction slated for Christmas release

Ghost Recon - Image 1

A new entry in Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon franchise was confirmed in the company’s recently-released financial documents along with target release windows for two more Ubisoft games.

Actual game details are still on the thin side, but the fourth Ghost Recon game is apparently being readied for release within Ubisoft’s 2009-2010 fiscal period, which ends in March 2010.

The delay-addled Splinter Cell: Conviction (PC, Xbox 360) was also mentioned in the documents, this time rocking a Christmas 2009 release along with Red Steel 2. We’ll see if it finally manages to make it to a target release date without any mishaps.

Ubisoft confirms Red Steel 2

Red Steel 2 - Image 1Head’s up. Ubisoft has officially announced Red Steel 2, Ubisoft’s first crack at the Wii MotionPlus. When it comes out, you’ll be able to enjoy the gun-trotting, katana-hacking action of the game using the shiny new peripheral.

So says Tony Key, senior VP of sales and marketing at Ubisoft:

Red Steel was a unique opportunity for Ubisoft to work in tandem with Nintendo to create a title exclusively for the launch of the Wii console.

Red Steel 2 is another milestone for the company as it is the first Ubisoft title with full Wii MotionPlus integration

The image reminds me a lot of Afro Samurai, and having the revolver hanging on a katana really suggests the Afro Samurai look. Anyway, Red Steel 2 is currently set to be released on the holidays later this year.

Time reveals its 100 Most Influential People, Shigeru Miyamoto slips to 42nd UPDATE

Shigeru Miyamoto - Image 1Like they say, once you’re at the top, there’s nowhere to go but down. In Shigeru Miyamoto’s case, he went down quite a bit. After being at the top of Time 100 last year, the Nintendo gaming mastermind drops to #42 of Time Magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people from various fields and industries. So who else made it to the list?

With a dominating vote count of 16,794,368, the unnamed founder of the community website 4chan, “moot,” takes the top spot. Coming at a very distant second is Malaysian Democratic icon, Anwar Ibrahim with 2,316,378 votes.

Other popular names on that list include Kobe Bryant at #9, Li’l Wayne at #12, Tina Fey at #15, and Pound-for-Pound champ Manny Pacquiao at #22. Barrack Obama is at #37, while Sarah Palin makes it to #81, which is funny because I seriously don’t believe she’s more influential than #89 Steve Jobs.

Shigure Miyamoto comes in at #42 with 614,641 votes, right below Disney pop princess Miley Cyrus at #41. Yes, Miley Cyrus is apparently more influential than Miyamoto. Funny as it sounds, it could be true, with all the exposure that Disney is giving “Hannah Montanna” who also has her own video game.

Who would you put at the top of your list?

UPDATE

If you read the first letters of #1-22, it says, “Marble Cake also The Game.”
The list was hacked, and thus, the list ain’t legit. We’ll keep you posted on the real list if it comes out.
