Nintendo Points Card

Here’s our first look at the new “Nintendo Points Card.”  Nintendo Points, depending on what system they are redeemed on, will go into your Wii account or DSi account.  Unfortunately, as of now, these two accounts cannot be combined.

A Boy and His Blob getting remake for the Wii

a boy and his blob - Image 1Those of you who are unfortunate enough to be too young to know this game will have a chance to redeem themselves.

The classic 1989 game, A Boy and His Blob, is getting a remake for the Wii in celebration of the game’s 20th anniversary. The studio who took up the task of making the remake is Majesco Entertainment, the studio behind Cooking Mama and Psychonauts.

Majesco tried to resurrect the game before for the DS, but that project was canceled due to financial trouble for the studio. It may be for the best though, since the Wii remake sounds way better. According to the press release, the Wii remake will feature “groundbreaking hand drawn and painted animation technology, the all-new presentation provides a polished, cinematic feel.”

In case you didn’t guess yet, A Boy and His Blob is about a story about… a boy and his blob. The blob, named Blobert, has the odd ability of being able to transform into various objects depending on what kind of jellybean you feed him. He can turn into a ladder if you feed him a licorice jelly bean, for instance. Together, they have to travel to Blobert’s planet of Blobolonia to defeat the evil emperor. Oooooh.

First Impressions: Rainbow Islands Towering Adventure

Overall the game is decent; it’s Rainbow Islands in general look and feel. What is missing is a lot of the charm of the original and the themes of the different worlds. I’ve only been to the first two levels, so maybe there’s new stuff further on, but I couldn’t see much different in the [...]

Parents in UK are cool, 74 think gaming is educational

74 of parents think gaming is educational - Image 1A new study from Microsoft, called “Play Safe, Play Smart” yielded some interesting results from parents in the UK.

A good number of them believe that games are educational (well.. Grand Theft Auto IV did teach a 6-year-old how to drive) and a great majority feel personally responsible for checking the age rating of the games their kids play.

Here are the rest of the results:

  • 61 state that games are a great social experience
  • 52 feel gaming brings their families together
  • 80 see the pastime as a vital component in a balanced blend of modern and traditional entertainment
  • 73 are aware of parental controls on game console
  • 94 feel personally responsible for checking the age rating of the games their kids play
  • 74 believe that games are educational

Putting my usual sense of cynicism aside and trying not to think that some parents just wanted to tick off the “this makes me look responsible” box, it would be interesting to know what kind of games they let their kids play, and if the parents are gamers themselves.

We finally have a solid release date for the Rock Band game starring the band that rocked the world, The Beatles. The game is slated for a release on September 9, released simultaneously worldwide for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and the Wii.

The Beatles: Rock Band will come in three flavors, depending on the hardware you want to buy. Here are your choices:

  • Limited Edition Premium Bundle (US 249.99) will allow fans to pick up the guitar, bass, mic or drums and experience The Beatles extraordinary catalogue of music through gameplay that takes players on a journey through the legacy and evolution of the band s legendary career.
  • Standalone Guitars Edition (US 99.99) will offer a limited number of new hardware offerings modeled after instruments used by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr throughout their career.
  • Software Edition (US 59.99)  will be offered as standalone software and hardware as well as a limited edition bundle. The game will be compatible with all Rock Band instrument controllers and other current music-based video game peripherals.

Unfortunately, the press release didn’t include a song list, but I’m hoping it’ll have Yellow Submarine in there.

Watchmen: 16-bit Game + Motion Comic

A Watchmen website has launched at MinutemenArcade.com, which includes an old school style Watchmen video game. It’s kinda like if there was an 16-bit Watchmen video game for the SNES. The game reminds me of Final Fight.
