Pachter calls MMO gamers “addicts”

World of Warcraft - Image 1

Ohhhhh boy… Talk about flame bait. Reuters recently quizzed various stakeholders and analysts on their take on the recession benefiting the MMO scene. With jobs being lost, a lot of folks have more time on their hands now, and that points to more play time for MMO players.

When asked about the matter, here’s what Michael Pachter said:

I don’t think (online multiplayer games) get impacted at all, because people who play them are addicts… Losing their jobs makes them more likely to play because they have more time to play.

He’s been making news a lot lately for his market predictions, but this is a little different from his usual brand of statements. Let’s see if he’ll explain himself further in the coming days.

MadWorld starts bloody North American reign on March 10

Madworld - Image 1

Forget March 31. Sega and Platinum Games will be bringing the ultra-violent MadWorld to North America three weeks earlier than that. According to Joystiq, a Sega America rep has confirmed that the game will start turning Wiis black, white, and red all over by March 10.

I expect the self-appointed guardians of America’s morality will be letting their attack dogs loose on this game soon, seeing as how it can, to paraphrase MediaWatch UK, destroy the Wii’s clean-cut image. They might choose to wait until the game actually gets certified by the ESRB, though. Yep, it still hasn’t been rated, but an M rating is expected.

Dissatisfied gamer arrested for threatening to blow up Hudson

Bomberman - Image 1

A Japanese man has been arrested for threatening to blow up the Japanese video game company Hudson. His reason? They wouldn’t listen to his criticisms of their games.

The 29-year-old suspect, a part-time courier named Takao Ike, had apparently threatened the company 11 times, from October 2008 to January 16 this year. Apart from the bomb threat, Ike also demanded an 80 trillion yen ransom.

Ike admitted to the bomb threat. In an affidavit, he said that he did it because even though he had let Hudson know about his demands regarding their games, the games themselves didn’t improve. I wonder what particular game really ticked him off.

Wii homebrew – DolphinWX Rev2069

Super Mario Sunshine - Image 1DolphinWX has been updated by Daco, and it’s now up to Rev2069. This Gamecube emulator also has preliminary support for the Wii as well as basic Triforce emulation. The Wii compatibility isn’t as good as the Gamecube compatibility, but a lot of games are fully playable.

The only changes from the last revision is that this one has the saving and loading bugs fixed, so you don’t have to worry every time you access your data.

ReSolve: “strong interest” in Free Radical, formal announcement this week

Haze - Image 1

It looks like Free Radical – and, by extension, the TimeSplitters series which a lot of you readers seem to be fans of – may still have a future after all.

There has apparently been “very strong” interest in the company according to ReSolve Partners, the administration firm that took over when Free Radical went into administration back in December. The formal announcement of the studio’s future will be made this week.

The main goal is to sell the studio as a whole, but ReSolve said that it would split Free Radical apart if that turns out to be the more lucrative option. The studio’s IPs may also be sold to other companies.

Two companies that are reportedly interested in Free Radical are Codemasters and Monumental Games. ReSolve also mentioned that some companies outside of the video game industry have also shown interest in the Haze and TimeSplitters developer.

Latest UK charts – Fit on top, Layton on the rise once more

Wii Fit has cemented its position on the top of the UK charts by, er, dropping 17% of sales from last week, but nevertheless selling enough to keep Call of Duty in runner-up spot, while EA’s definitely-better-than-PES-this-year FIFA 09 rises to third position. But the big mover on this week’s chart is Professor Layton and [...]
