Science wants to know if Wii Fit actually makes you fit
Filed in External News, , 1:29 pm
One of the more interesting appeals of Wii Fit is that it’ll keep you, well, fit. Now is this just a gimmick, or has Miyamoto stumbled upon the secret to family fitness? Science wants to know.
Researcher Scott Owens from the University of Mississippi are starting tests to determine the effectiveness of the game’s regimen. Says Owen:
Obesity has become an epidemic in the United States, and one of the reasons is the adults and children are getting less physical activity.
There has been an upswing in sales of whole body movement video games over the past few years. This potentially could help family fitness, so we are looking at the research aspect to see if family fitness improves after purchasing one of these whole body movement game consoles.
The tests will follow the progress of eight families, who will be under the Wii Fit regimen for three months, and then without it for another three. Part of the regimen includes duking it out for who goes first. Well, no, but it’d be more interesting that way.

Rumor: Rock Band getting the Lego treatment
Filed in External News, , 11:17 am
Sufferin’ succotash, not another Lego rumor! (Yes, I mutter Looney Tunes curses when I hear facepalm rumors.)
One of videogaming247’s sources is claiming that another Lego game is in development. And not just any Lego game. A Rock Band Lego game! I hope we won’t see any exploding Lego artists on stage now.
VG247’s source claims that the information is “100 percent correct.,” though he didn’t mention any other details. I would prefer Lego Halo though, too bad that was bunk.
The leading Lego rumor making the rounds right now is Harry Potter, which is a more likely candidate. More chances for exploding Lego pieces to go flying everywhere.
11-year-old Sonic fan faced court to legalize hedgehogs in Kansas
Filed in External News, , 10:26 am
How far would you go for your favorite video game character? This kid went all the way to court.
11-year-old Judson King was such a Sonic the Hedgehog fan that he decided he wanted the real thing – only to find out that hedgehogs were illegal in his city of Lawrence, in Kansas.
What’s a boy to do but convince the court that hedgehogs are fudgy-wudgy creatures and not a danger to civilization as we know it? After three years of work, he finally built up his case enough that when he finally got his day in court, it was “no contest.”
The court found no real reason to maintain the ban, and the woodland critter was legalized. Judson finally got his first hedgehog last Christmas. Now let’s hope he won’t paint his new pet blue and throw it through rings.

It’s the last day of the weekend, how depressing. Let’s talk about something entertaining to pick up the mood. Here’s some news on Jack Thompson.
Thompson, who was recently disbarred, has taken his appeal to the United States Supreme Court. He asked for a deadline for the filing of his petition for writs of certiorari. That’s legalese for “give me a chance.”
The Supreme Court granted his extension, and he now has until February 18 to file his petition. What are his chances for the SC to hear his case? Well, according to their website, the SC is presented with 10,000 cases a year. Only 100 of these are granted a hearing.
