Wii Homebrew Channel beta 8 released
Filed in External News, June 5, 2008, 8:52 pm
The latest build for the Homebrew Channel for the Wii is at Beta 8, and Team Twiizers‘ update has made the HBC installer a bit more proactive in determining the status of your Nintendo Wii’s System Menu. It also sports faster SD card reading performance, and many other improvements have been noted in the Homebrew Channel’s changelog:
- you don t need to eject your memcards anymore
- switched from IOS35 to IOS21, this makes the hbc usable on older firmwares
- improved some translations
- the IP label isn t cut off anymore
- fixed argv support when loading SD apps
- fixed a minor wiiload issue
- the SD app entries are now sorted alphabetically
- wiimote rumble support
Now while it addresses the hiccups some users may have from loading off of the WiiLoad homebrew loading utility, take note that upon updating HBC Beta 8 may rearrange your homebrew collection. If you’ve painstakingly organized your SD card contents according to your tastes, this update might throw out all that hard work in a heartbeat. You are forewarned.
Now for folks who have boot capable Nintendo Wiis and would rather install a brand new Homebrew Channel without toying with the Twilight Hack, you’re free to use the ISO versions of HBC Beta 8 auto-installers. Just make sure to download and burn the right version according to your Wii’s hard-coded region, boot the disc up, and watch it make miracles.
As with the previous releases, a separate archive for the bundled Wii HBC applications is provided for those who are extremely picky about their collections. Read the procedures for installing HBC Beta 8 if you’re braving the Twilight Hack route (latest Twilight Hack build here). With that said, enjoy!

Rock Paper Scissors – simple homebrewed fun for your Wii
Filed in External News, , 8:11 pm
It’s always interesting to follow the development of Wii homebrew, and checking out the simple homebrewed applications and games is always a good way to start in tackling Wii homebrew’s progress.
The game that we have right here, Kazart’s Rock Paper Scissors, is a good way to while away the time, while witnessing the possibility of fun homebrew games that we can have with Wii’s waggly console.
The controls are simple, like the game itself, and makes use of a Gamecube controller. When the word “SHOOT!” gets displayed on the screen, press any of the D-pad buttons: Up for Rock, Left for Paper, and Down for Scissors. Once you’re done with the game, just press start to exit the program.
There’s no readme file included with the download, so you need to know the basics of running homebrew on the Wii first before attempting to do so. If you have any questions, however, you can always drop by the Via link to contact the developer directly. Enjoy!

Dual NAND Flash hack on Wii attempted
Filed in External News, , 6:53 pm
ChipD of HackMii attempted to mount a second NAND Flash on a Nintendo Wii board by way of a proof of concept project. The NAND Flash chip found inside third-party NAND Flash drive was found to be identical to the one inside Nintendo’s next generation console, and using the Infectus modchip and amoxiflash, ChipD was able to clone the official NAND Flash chip onto the new one.
To keep both NAND Flash chips from conflicting with each other, ChipD made use of their Chip Enable line which, if supplied with the required voltage, will enable the chip for operation. With a 2-way switch employed, both NAND Flashes could be switched on and off in alternating fashion.
With this switch in place, the Wii could load the cloned NAND Flash instead of the official one and bear the threat of accidental bricking. It will not help in recovering from a bricked Wii (cloning a bricked NAND will still produce a bricked NAND), but it does appear to be a preventive measure.
ChipD claims that up to four NAND Flash chips could be mounted on top of the official one with room to cover the Wii’s internals.
But with anything that involves a soldering iron and your warranty-covered Nintendo Wii, we don’t suggest attempting the hack unless you’re in real need of it. We think that the only folk who’d seriously consider giving this hack a spin are those planning on testing a homebrew application with the fallout yield equivalent of an atomic bomb.
Still, you can’t discount the other possibilities lined up. We’ll keep you updated if any more derivations of the project crop up. Stay tuned.

Day 18 – Goal Change
Filed in External News, , 10:32 amI changed my goal on Wii Fit – I wasn’t going to reach the 10 pounds in 1 month because I had missed a good 11 days due to packing, moving, and unpacking.
I set it to 4 pounds in 2 weeks, which is admirable and should be doable.
I started watching a lot more closely what I eat when I noticed I wasn’t eating enough vegetables so trying to get a salad a day in there now to help that out. I’ve found Mcdonalds actually has some nice salads if you don’t use the dressing.
With all of that said, since I changed my goal on Monday, I’m 2 pounds away from reaching it already. Last night I got in a good 60 minutes in the “bank” on Wii Fit. Let me just say the Strength exercises are kicking my sorry ass.
